Survive The Night - Riley Sagar

Image
A dark night. Two strangers in a car, traveling down dark roads. Set before the days of cell phones and internet. I thought I was in for an awesome ride, but things took a detour. 🌟🌟🌟 Survive the Night is a page-turning thriller set in 1991 where the stupidest female protagonist ever decides to do a ride share road trip with a strange man just two months after her best friend was murdered by a serial killer still on the loose. Since she’s such an unreliable narrator, both she AND readers are prime targets for gaslighting, all at the mercy of a cray cray antagonist with a truly laughable agenda. The story is fine. I was never bored. Riley Sager’s, The Last Time I Lied is still on top of my favourite thrillers and i think my expectations were way too high. While the writing in this one is still good, it’s not oozing with atmosphere the way I hoped it would. The last few chapters were a bit too complicated for me. The motives and character actions weren’t very realistic, and I pe...

Book Review - The Paris Library

The book follows the experiences of Odile, a librarian and Lily, a high school student. It’s about people affected by the Nazi occupation of France, how the Librarians and other staff at the American Library of Paris tried to save some of their patrons as well as preserve their right to read by delivering books to their Jewish subscribers who were no longer allowed by the Nazis to use the library. I was compelled to read some about the history of ALP and discovered in those articles as well as in the author’s note that some of the characters in this novel are based on real people. In the novel, Dorothy Reeder (a wonderful sounding name for a Librarian) who is the director of the Library was the director of the actual ALP from 1936-1941. I was so impressed how accurate this novel reflected the history. A prog...

This was a wild one. It was thrilling, atmospheric and genuinely creepy. It had my heart racing at more than one moment. It's a true murder mystery, with some amazing twists and turns that kept me hooked.  In this book, we follow a young girl named Carly, who is on a mission to find out what happened to her aunt, Vivian, in 1982, at the Sun Down Motel, from where, she suddenly disappeared one night without leaving a trace. Now Carly is back at the same place and she unravels some dark secrets. Will she be able to find out what happened to Vivian? I loved the dual timeline. It was amazing! I think what made this book so special was the feelings it gave me. The creepy, chills down my spine- feelings I had th...

On the one hand its a very atmospheric thriller with some great description and good dramatic tension. On the other its a not so brilliantly executed mystery with one of the most inept investigators I've ever seen who spends most of the book having her job mansplained to her by her incredibly horrible brother and significant other. Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel. But Elin’s taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancΓ©e, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept. Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately decided there’s something about the hotel that makes her nervous. Th...

Book Review - No Exit by Taylor Adams

Image
Looking for an amazing thriller with a great plot and some mind-blowing twists? Stop right here! No exit by Taylor Adams is the real deal! A brilliant, edgy thriller about four strangers, a blizzard, a kidnapped child, and a determined young woman desperate to unmask and outwit a vicious psychopath. No exit is what I want in a thriller: brilliantly crafted, suspenseful with some mind-blowing twists. I absolutely loved this book! I  With a gripping plot and moments of trepidation that will send chills down your spine, this book is packed with thrill. I was continuously anticipating what's going to happen next but there were things which I never saw coming. It was brilliant. Also, the protagonist was really brave, who showed immense courage and bravery in the story. Trust me you don't want to be in her situation ever! Haha! I can't recommend this book enough. If you are a fan of Thrillers/Mystery then this book is definitely for you!

My Rating - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Holy smokes!! I.LOVED.THIS.BOOK!! This is a true thriller in the sense of the word - it’s thrilling with understated suspense and it creeped me out in the best way possible. I was hooked from the beginning and just couldn't stop reading until I found out what happened at the end. I loved the plot. It was creepy and mysterious, the writing was engaging and full of twists and turns, the theories that I had, were all wrong by the way! I think the best kind of stories are those that can scare you silly without any violence. And that is exactly what you will find here. Some might argue, that the pace is slow, but I thought it was perfect. Fifteen years ago, summer camper Emma Davis watched sleepily as her three cabin mates snuck out of their cabin in the dead of night. The last she and anyone saw of them was Vivian closing...

Book Review - Confess by Collen Hoover

I absolutely loved the concept of anonymous confessions, submitted by the readers and transforming them into art work. I thought it was brilliant. Coho has a knack of infusing something unique to her books from poetry, to songs, to plot twist. In this book, it was art. It was quite unique. They were the best part of the book for me. Unfortunately, the rest left me feeling underwhelmed. As with most Collen Hoover's books, the pace was good! But I felt there was something missing, it lacked the depth for me. I have no problem with cliches or whatever as long as I am able to relate to the characters. Sadly, Owen and Auburn left me cold. I couldn't find anything remotely interesting about them. Owen, in particular I found myself conflicted with. But I did love him in the end. Auburn was a sweet girl, I somew...

I liked this book but I didn't love it. It was gripping, suspenseful and fascinating but it wasn't anything that I haven't read before. The pace was a bit slow for my liking. I liked how the story moved back and forth between the past and the present but there were things which were irrelevant to the main plot and could've been avoided. In Shiver, we travel to the French Alps, where a group of friends are arriving for a reunion. Ten years ago, the group met while training for a snowboarding competition. That fateful winter, things took a tragic turn, and one of their own went missing. The reunion turns deadly when five friends discover someone has deliberately stranded them in a deserted mountaintop resort. I really liked the mystery, and th...

Two individuals with damaged personalities and tragic pasts coming together, understanding and appreciating each other and ultimately falling in love. It was so pure. I sometimes wonder how she comes with such thoughtful concepts. In this book, you follow the life of a young girl, Beyah, who lives in Kentucky, from destitution, loneliness to starvation, she has been through a lot. When her mother dies, she has no choice but to move to her father's house, in Texas, at first she resists her new family and her neighbour, Samson, who hides behind his camera with his secrets and mysteries but it’s on the beach that Beyah learns what it’s like to trust, to love, and be loved, not just with Samson, but with a family she never expected. As with all of Colleen Hoover’s books, the writing is solid and the character development is amazing. The characters were ...

I am glad to say, it didn't disappoint. It was cute, entertaining, melodramatic and sweet at the same time with too much of drama. But I guess that’s mainly why it’s entertaining and it’s basically the meat of the plot. I also loved the author's description of Paris, it was probably my favourite part about this book. The story starts when Anna’s father decides it would be in her best interest to study abroad her Senior year, so Anna finds herself studying in Paris, but missing her life back in Atlanta. Gradually she becomes more comfortable with her new life and new friends – especially Γ‰tienne St. Clair. The more Anna finds her feelings for “St. Clair” changing from friendship to love, the more she is re...

This was my fourth Collen Hoover book and I've come to the realisation that once you start reading her books, you JUST CAN'T STOP!. No matter, how flawed the characters are and no matter how weird and predictable the plot is, nothing can stop you. Her writing is honestly so engaging that it just pulls you right in.  Regretting You follows mother/daughter duo Morgan and Clara. Morgan had Clara when she was only 17, and put her dreams on hold to raise her daughter. The two love each other, but often clash due to their strong personalities. It delves into the complex relationship between a parent and a child, the challenges of growing up and seeking independence, and how to move on after tragedy. The reason I gave this book 3.5 stars is firstly because of Clara, the daughter. I'll be honest, I understand she was a teenager but at times, I felt she was really annoying and overly frustrating. Terrifying right!? That's exactly how I feel when I read about the Holocaust Victims. We truely can't envisage what they had to endure, at that time when there was no humanity left. This is the story of Helene Hannemann. She was tasked with caring for Auschwitz’s youngest prisoners. I admire Helene and her strength. She was storng, brave and fierce. She took care of her family and the inmates till her last breath. Being from the 'Aryan' race, she had every chance to stay behind and let the Nazi's take her five ch...

Summary -  Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before. Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are to either release the spell and deal with the consequences, or enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her. That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.  Review First of all, I wasn't too familiar with the Russian History and I knew nothing about the Romanovs. So, I went on and did my own resear...
