Book Review : Romanov by Nadine Brandes

Summary -

Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before.

Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are to either release the spell and deal with the consequences, or enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her.

That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.

Review

First of all, I wasn't too familiar with the Russian History and I knew nothing about the Romanovs. So, I went on and did my own research and I am not so happy to report that I ruined the entire book for me. That's a bummer! Right!? I know! Nevertheless, I was hooked when I started reading it.

More than half of the book takes place during the events of the Romanov family imprisonment at the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg, Russia by the Red Army. These were trying times for the family where circumstances were grim. They starved and dealt with severe punishments if acted out of term. This book has such a strong family bond, it plays a big part in the story which I found amazing. Anastasia was a great character. She was such a strong-willed woman and I loved how she put her heart into everything she did.

I liked this book for the historical suspense of the Romanovs and their time in captivity, however, I was turned off the by unrealistic “magic and spells” content. It was certainly an interesting alternative to the true ending of the Romanovs, but I wasn’t expecting the twist of fantasy. This is just a personal preference coz It feels incongruous to me having magic randomly thrown into the prettified version of a gruesome murder.

Overall, I really liked this one, it was very informative. I would love to read more about the romanovs sisters and family.
